What shape is your face? A doctor explains how to diagnose your face type

Knowing your face shape, such as whether you have a round face or a long face, will make it easier to approach your ideal style with makeup and hairstyle, and make fashion more fun. Therefore, this time we will introduce a “face shape check” that you can self-diagnose under the supervision of a doctor at a beauty clinic. We will also explain the measures you can take to maintain the shape of your face, which changes with age.

Supervision: Dr. Akiko Imaizumi (Director of Imaizumi Skin Clinic, Seisenkai Medical Corporation)

There are 6 types of face shapes! Knowing the characteristics is the key to bringing out the charm

types of face shapes

The shape of the face…The outline is an element that affects a person’s beauty, so much so that it is said that “those who control the outline control the beauty.” It is said that 80% of the impression you give at a glance is determined by the outline and eyes. Because it is such an important part, you can make the most of your charm by understanding which category you fit into.

The first step to discovering your charm! Easy self-check to know your face shape

Contours can be roughly divided into 6 types. Doctor Akiko Imaizumi taught me a simple self-check method. Let’s start by finding out which type you fit into!

How to self-check your face shape

The guidelines for “checking the shape of your face” are the ratio of length to width, the width of your forehead, and your jawline. To perform a self-check, first take a photo of the front of your face with your smartphone and draw grid lines using a photo editing app.

Then, draw a “circle” from your forehead hairline to the tip of your chin. It’s easy to understand if you judge the shape of the circle you drew and how much it sticks out (are the gills angular from the circle?).

Also, check the balance ratio when drawing the grid lines. Please see the illustration (diagram) for details.

Please note that the “face shape check” is just a guide. If you want to accurately understand the shape (contour) of your face, we recommend that you consult a doctor.

egg type

If your forehead is wide and your chin is not too pointed, you have an oval shape. This applies to people whose horizontal lines are evenly proportioned when they draw grid lines during self-checking, and whose outline follows the lines when they draw a circle. In Europe and America, it is called the “oval shape,” and it is a contour that is said to be beautiful all over the world. It is considered to be an ideal shape that is easily liked by people and gives a lovely impression.

Rectangular (long face) type

People who feel that their face is longer than those with an oval face have a rectangular (long-faced) face. This applies to people who, when drawing grid lines during a self-check, have uneven ratios of horizontal lines and the length from the bottom of their eyebrows to the tip of their chin is 2/3 or more. It has a mature and calm atmosphere.

Gill tension (base) type

People with a sharp and small chin that look like they stick out from the base of their ears to the sides have a “gill-shaped (base) type.” This applies to people who, when drawing a circle during a self-check, end up with an ellipse, but the outline sticks out from the line and the gills are stretched out. They often give the impression that they have a strong will.

Round shape

A person with a rounder jawline than an oval jawline has a round jawline. In the self-check, when you draw a circle, the shape of the circle is not an oval, but is similar to a circle. It gives a friendly and adorable impression.

Square type

People whose jaw line is straight and almost square in shape are called “square type.” In the self-check, when I drew a circle, the outline came out from the line and it looked angular. It is similar to the gill-stretched type, but it is characterized by its overall angular shape and less protrusion of the chin. This face type also gives a strong impression.

inverse triangle

People with an inverted triangular shape have a slightly wider circumference (where the headband is wrapped) and a tighter chin than an oval shape.
In the self-check, when a circle is drawn, it becomes an ellipse, but the outline is inside the line.
It gives a calm and mature impression.

Does your face lose its shape as you get older? What measures do you need to take to maintain it?

I hope you were able to get a rough idea of which face shape your face fits into by using the “Face Shape Check”. However, did you know that the shape of your face changes as you age? Mr. Imaizumi taught us the causes and countermeasures.

Why the face loses its shape as we age

The reason your face loses its shape is because changes occur deep within your skin as you age. Specifically, wrinkles such as nasolabial folds and golgo lines become noticeable and sag, making you look older and making you look older.

The face loses its shape due to changes within the face due to aging.

Our face is made up of five layers: bones, muscles, subcutaneous fat (subcutaneous tissue), dermis (skin), and epidermis (skin), and each layer changes with age. The effects of aging progress simultaneously in multiple areas, causing the face to lose its shape. Let’s take a closer look.

1. Changes in facial bones

Bone changes due to aging are one of the causes of facial deformity.

First of all, as we age, the bones that form the foundation of our face decrease in bone density and shrink. Specifically, the area around the temples and eye sockets (the hollows that house the eyes) widens, and the bones around the cheeks and jaw become depressed, causing changes in the shape of the face.

In addition, changes in the bone can no longer adequately support subcutaneous fat and skin, leading to drooping, sagging, and wrinkles. It can be said that it has a big impact on the shape of the face, such as making the face line look sluggish.

2. Changes in “subcutaneous fat” on the face

Changes in subcutaneous fat due to aging are one of the causes of facial deformity.

As we age, subcutaneous fat decreases in volume and moves from its original position (descends). As a result, the forehead and temples become depressed, the cheeks become hollow, and the cheekbones become more prominent.

In addition, subcutaneous fat sags, causing sagging and loss of sharp contours. The decrease in the amount of subcutaneous fat around the mouth causes the wrinkles to become deeper, and the tip of the chin to shrink and become shorter, all of which affect the contour of the face in various ways.

3. Changes due to lifestyle habits

It is not something that happens due to a temporary habit, but it happens due to long-term effects and changes over time. The force with which you bite also affects the shape of your face, including sagging jaws and jaw gill tension. People who have clenched teeth on either the left or right side, or those who unconsciously clench their teeth while sleeping, need to be careful because their masseter muscles tend to become stiff and this tends to become a habit.

What are the effective measures to maintain the shape of your face according to doctors?

1.  Get creative with your makeup

Make your face less noticeable with makeup

Although it is not a fundamental measure to maintain the shape of your face or improve its appearance, it is possible to adjust the contours with makeup as a temporary measure.

Specifically, “highlights” and “shading” are mentioned. At the end of your base makeup, highlight is a color that is lighter than your foundation and is applied to areas where you want to add height, such as your forehead or chin, to collect light and create unevenness, giving it a three-dimensional look. Shading creates shadows by applying a color darker than your foundation to your face lines, giving you a clean and sharp look.

2. Utilize the mouthpiece

It is also recommended that you use a mouthpiece, as the clenching that occurs while you sleep can happen unconsciously. It can relieve tension in the masseter muscles and suppress gill tension. Please consult a specialist doctor and make sure to use the mouthpiece that is suitable for you.

3. Harness the power of aesthetic medicine

Cosmetic treatment to correct the shape of the face

Changes within the skin, such as bone atrophy and loss of subcutaneous fat, which cause facial deformity, are difficult to deal with through self-care. If you want to improve your appearance, one option is to consider cosmetic medicine.

Many people may think that plastic surgery (surgery that uses a scalpel) is necessary to bring the shape of the face closer to the ideal, but it can also be treated with cosmetic medicine that does not use a scalpel.

Let’s introduce some typical treatments that help maintain the shape of your face or improve its appearance.
*Includes treatments not approved in Japan

・Hyaluronic acid injection treatment
This is a popular treatment for improving sagging skin. Volume can be created by injecting medical hyaluronic acid onto the bone.

・Ultrasonic irradiation treatment
The specific treatment involves irradiating ultrasound.HIFU can be mentioned. This treatment aims to tighten the skin and activate collagen and elastin production through thermal energy stimulation and can be expected to have sagging and lifting effects.

・Thread treatment/thread lift
A treatment that physically lifts sagging skin by passing special threads under the skin that absorb over time. The stimulation of the inserted threads activates cells within the skin and promotes the production of collagen and elastin, which helps improve skin firmness and elasticity.

4.Care and measures that require attention

On the internet and in magazines, there are various measures that claim to help maintain the shape of your face or prevent it from deforming, but there are some measures that you should be careful about.

For example, stretching facial muscles through facial massage or facial yoga. There is nothing wrong with doing things to loosen the stiffness of your facial muscles or lift them up, but many people tend to overdo it when it comes to self-care. Be careful not to apply too much pressure and cause friction on your skin, as this can lead to skin problems such as wrinkles. It is important to use plenty of cream and do it gently.

To keep your face shape intact! Find a reliable doctor/clinic

Consult a doctor to improve facial deformity

There are only so many self-care things you can do to keep your face in shape or improve its appearance. Also, because multiple causes overlap, it is difficult to judge the condition on your own.

In order to avoid the wrong approach, if you are concerned about the shape of your face, consulting a specialist doctor is the shortest way to improve it. If you have confidence in your face shape, which is the key to determining your first impression, you will be able to bring out your charm even more.

For that reason, I can understand choose a clinic that can be said to be important. The key is to have the doctor provide proper counseling. Please be sure to find out if the doctor is someone who can help you with your worries and anxieties, listens carefully to your concerns, and suggests various treatments.
